What the first half of 2026 tells us about the forecast — and what may come next.
On February 17, the Year of the Fire Horse began. In Chinese metaphysics, the Horse represents movement, mobilization and fully manifested Yang. Fire adds speed, visibility and intensity. Together, they describe a time when forces that have been accumulating beneath the surface become visible and begin to act.
Our forecast for 2026 did not predict a single dramatic event. It described a trigger year: a year of initiation, geopolitical realignment, technological and cultural prologues, financial and informational acceleration, and preparation for deeper transformations between 2027 and 2030. Most importantly, we described the Fire Horse as transformative rather than destructive.
Six months later, that framework is worth revisiting.
And the most striking conclusion is this: The Fire Horse has not simply made the world faster. It has shortened the distance between pressure and consequence.
The fog is lifting
One of the central ideas of the original forecast was that the Horse dislikes “fog” — ambiguity, hesitation and indefinite positioning.
The first half of 2026 has reinforced that tendency.
The major geopolitical questions have become increasingly difficult to postpone:
- the future of Ukraine and European security;
- the strategic confrontation between the United States and China;
- energy security; the Middle East;
- and the growing competition over technology and industrial capacity.
The world has not divided neatly into two camps. Instead, countries are becoming more deliberate about which technologies they depend on, which supply chains they trust, and which security relationships they are willing to support.
Strategic ambiguity has not disappeared. But its cost is rising.
That is very close to what the original forecast meant by the disappearance of the gray zone.
AI: The technology that compresses time
If one prediction has become especially visible, it is the importance of technologies that compress time. Our forecast identified AI, autonomous systems, cybersecurity, sensors, navigation, logistics, defense technology and energy resilience as characteristic technologies of the Fire Horse.
Artificial intelligence has moved even further into the center of this transformation.
But AI is revealing something that was less obvious at the beginning of the year: the AI revolution is also an energy revolution.
The International Energy Agency projects that electricity consumption by data centers will more than double to around 945 terawatt-hours by 2030, with AI-driven accelerated servers responsible for a large share of the increase.
This changes the strategic equation. The competition is no longer simply about who develops the best AI model. It is increasingly about who has the chips, data centers, electricity, grids and capital required to operate AI at scale.
Technology is becoming infrastructure. Infrastructure is becoming geopolitics.
The financial prediction
Our original forecast suggested that Fire would accelerate finance, speculation, venture capital and the flow of capital toward visible, fast-moving sectors — while creating the possibility of “fire bubbles,” where expectations outrun reality.
That prediction should not be interpreted as a forecast that global stock indexes would simply surge. They have not followed one uniform trajectory. The more interesting development has been the internal concentration and sensitivity of the market.
The Bank of England reported in July 2026 that global equity gains have been particularly strong in AI-related companies, while valuations and market concentration have increased. In the S&P 500, AI-related companies now represent roughly half of the index by some measures, compared with about a quarter in 2022.
So the better description is: The market has not necessarily accelerated upward. The market’s reaction function has accelerated.
Capital moves quickly toward whatever investors believe represents the future — and can move just as quickly when that belief changes. That is a very Fire Horse phenomenon.
Ukraine: Transformation under pressure
We described 2026 as an existential year for Ukraine, emphasizing industrialization, military innovation, logistics, standards and institutional restructuring rather than simply framing the year as victory versus defeat.
The first half of the year has reinforced that direction.
The war continues, while Ukraine simultaneously develops new military technologies, strengthens its defense-industrial capacity and prepares for reconstruction.
The scale of that future reconstruction is enormous. A joint assessment by the Ukrainian government, World Bank, European Commission and United Nations estimates Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction needs at almost $588 billion over the next decade.
This means that Ukraine’s future is no longer only a military question. It is also a question of industrial capacity, energy, technology, labor, investment and European integration.
The war has forced Ukraine to innovate at extraordinary speed. The strategic challenge will be to transfer that capacity into the civilian economy when conditions allow.
If that happens, reconstruction could become more than restoration. It could become the creation of a different Ukraine.
The United States: forced clarification
The United States entered the Fire Horse year with strong Fire and Metal — technology, finance, visibility and coercive power — but weaker Earth: cohesion, trust and common ground.
The first half of 2026 suggests that this remains a useful framework. Political polarization, institutional stress and the increasingly visible connection between domestic politics and foreign policy have continued to test America’s capacity to convert power into coherent action.
The question is therefore not simply whether the United States remains powerful. It clearly does. The more difficult question is whether speed can be matched by institutional coherence.
War, energy and the new economy
The world economy has also demonstrated the dual character of 2026. The IMF’s July outlook projects global growth of 3 percent in 2026 and 3.4 percent in 2027. It describes an economy being pulled in opposite directions: an energy shock caused by war on one side, and an AI-driven technology investment boom on the other.
This is perhaps the most revealing economic picture of the year:
- War is creating instability.
- Technology is creating investment.
- Energy connects the two.
The result is not economic collapse, but rapid structural differentiation: countries integrated into the technology value chain can benefit from the AI boom, while energy-importing and technologically weaker economies face greater pressure.
This is exactly the kind of systemic transformation the original forecast anticipated.
The next generation moves to the front
The Fire Horse favors youth. This does not mean that every young person becomes a revolutionary. It means that technological and cultural change tends to reward people who are more comfortable with new tools, new forms of communication and rapid adaptation.
The World Economic Forum estimates that by 2030, technological and structural changes could create 170 million jobs while displacing 92 million. At the same time, employers expect about 39 percent of workers’ existing skills to change. Human abilities such as resilience, flexibility, creative thinking and leadership remain highly important.
The paradox is striking: the faster machines become, the more valuable adaptability becomes for humans.
What comes next?
The original forecast described it as a prologue to deeper transformations during 2027–2030. That makes the second half of 2026 particularly important.
We should expect continued pressure in three areas:
First, geopolitical architecture.
- The future of Ukraine, European security, U.S.-China competition and the Middle East will continue to reshape alliances and strategic priorities.
Second, technological infrastructure.
- AI will increasingly be constrained not by imagination but by electricity, chips, data centers, networks and capital.
Third, institutional adaptation.
- Governments, companies and societies will be forced to demonstrate whether they can keep pace with technological and geopolitical change.
The greatest danger is not necessarily a single crisis. It is institutional lag — the growing gap between how quickly reality changes and how quickly institutions can respond.
From “Speed + Control” to “Speed + Control + Selection”
At the beginning of the year, we proposed a simple personal formula:
Speed + Control.
After six months, I would add a third element:
Selection.
The problem of the Fire Horse is not a lack of opportunities. It is an excess of them. AI generates possibilities faster than people can evaluate them. Markets respond faster than investors can fully understand them. Information moves faster than institutions can verify it.
Chinese metaphysics offers a useful counterbalance:
- Water brings flexibility and pause.
- Earth provides grounding and continuity.
- Metal provides rules, boundaries and standards.
- Fire gives energy.
- The Horse gives movement.
But Water, Earth and Metal determine whether that movement becomes progress — or simply exhaustion.
The First Half Was Only the Beginning
Six months into the Year of the Fire Horse, the most striking thing is not that individual events have unfolded exactly as forecast. It is that the character of the year has become increasingly recognizable.
Across different parts of the world, pressures that had been building for years are being pushed into the open. Governments are being forced to reconsider security and industrial policy. Technology is moving from the realm of innovation into the infrastructure of everyday life. Energy has become a strategic question. Geopolitical uncertainty is becoming harder to manage through delay or ambiguity. And Ukraine, still fighting for its survival, is being transformed by the very pressures of war.
This is what the original forecast meant by a transformative year. The Fire Horse does not necessarily announce a single dramatic turning point. It changes the pace at which existing forces become visible — and the speed with which societies must respond to them.
Chinese metaphysics cannot tell us exactly what will happen next. Its value lies elsewhere: in helping us recognize the quality of a particular period — what kinds of forces are becoming stronger, what is losing its stability, and what kinds of action the moment demands.
The first half of 2026 suggests that the central quality of this year is indeed movement. But movement alone is not enough. The challenge is to move without losing direction, to adapt without abandoning stability, and to distinguish genuine opportunity from the noise created by speed.
That may be the deeper meaning of the Fire Horse.
2026 is the beginning of a process, not its conclusion. The cultural, technological and geopolitical shifts now becoming visible may take several years to mature. The more profound transformations may therefore belong to the period ahead — particularly 2027 to 2030, which our original forecast identified as the time when many of today’s developments could begin to take a more definite form.
The Horse is already running.
The question is no longer whether the world will change, but who will be able to change with it — and who will know where to go.
